Sheya FAQ

Q: Is Sheya a religion?

A: No. Sheya is a spiritual path, a means of transformation, and a few other things, but it is not a religion. While our map suggests that there is a divine nature to the universe, it does not define what this divine nature is, nor does it suggest that we should worship it in any particular way. There are Sheya who practice a variety of religions, from Christianity and Buddhism to Wicca and Hebrew Paganism.

Q: How does someone get started in Sheya?

A: The first step is to talk with as many different Sheya as possible. There are a lot of different perspectives on this path, and it's a good idea to check them out before diving in. You might also want to chat with some of the folks who have been around on the outside of the sheya community for a long time. If - after all this talking - you find you still want to go deeper, then you go mentor shopping. You find out which mentors are accepting new students and begin dialogues with them to determine which you might have a good rapport with. Once you've settled on a mentor - who has also agreed to work with you, the two of you will put together a contract that clearly defines what is expected of each of you.

Q: What do you mean by Magick?

A: In Sheya we define Magick as the intentional process of self transformation. What this definition actually means to the individual tends to change as the person goes through their own growth and transformation.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Lessons are $30. It may take from 4 to 8 years to go through the 6 lessons in the course. There is no charge at this point for initiations, and we have a number of junior mentors who provide their services at no charge. The standard monthly fee for a senior mentor is $100 a month.

Q: What if I start it and then find I don't like it?

A: While we encourage our students to work through resistance, if you feel like Sheya isn't a good fit for you - you can quit at any time.

Q: How long will this take?

A: It depends on how far you wish to take it. There are 6 basic lessons and 4 initiations that make up the course of study. After this there are other options for advanced work. The basic course has taken from 2 to 8 years. It all depends on how quickly you want to move through the process.

Q: How much input will I get from my mentor?

A: This depends on the mentor - and on how much input they feel you require at the moment. However, this process is student driven. That means that you will be the one who is primarily responsible for maintaining contact and doing your work. No one will be watching over your shoulder. If you need help, you will need to ask for it. Also, there is generally more input at the beginning of the process. This gradually lessens as the student becomes more and more capable of working with less input from the mentor, and also begins to reach out to other resources in the community.

Q: What are my responsibilities?

A: Simply put, your responsibility is to do your work and maintain contact with your mentor. If you do these things, the rest will follow.

Q: What are my mentor's responsibilities?

A: To be accessible; to provide you with the necessary lessons and learning materials; to provide access to initiation; to be an initial link with the larger sheya community; to listen clearly; to speak from the heart; and, to maintain and respect clear and appropriate boundaries at all times.

Q: What can I expect?

A: Generally speaking, you can expect a series of transformative experiences that will bring you to a deeper understanding and appreciation of your own Self and your relationship with the Mysteries of being human in this universe. More specifically, these experiences will differ greatly from one person to the next. They will be largely in response to whatever internal wounds or obstacles are released through the work and initiations.

Q: What do you mean by sheya community?

A: There are people who have been practicing this very recent tradition for over twenty years now. We share a common symbolic map and set of experiences. We have walked the same path and all of us have learned more about ourselves and the territory of human experience in the process. We do what we can to support each other in this journey. We have an official bi-annual sheya conference as well as smaller retreats. We also have an elist for active sheya, and other resources as well.
